Journal issue guest-edited by Ignacio Palacios

A special issue of Alicante Journal of English Studies (Vol. 30, 2017, pp. 3-355), titled “English as a contact language: Variation and diffusion”,  has just come out. It is guest edited by José A. Sánchez (University of Alicante) and Ignacio Palacios Martínez, coordinator of the SPERTUS team.

The issue carries 12 research articles, some of them authored by  junior (Yolanda Calvo-Benzies, Raquel P. Romasanta, Iván Tamaredo) and senior (Lucía Loureiro-Porto, Cristina Suárez-Gómez) members of ELC.

Alicante Journal of English Studies is an international publication indexed in major databases such as ERIH PLUS, MIAR and CARHUS Plus+ 2014.

New research project awarded to the team led by Elena Seoane at UVigo

On 26th December 2017 it was announced that the research team led by Elena Seoane, a member of the LVTC group at the University of Vigo, has received funding from the National Programme for Excellence in Scientific and Technical Research, for the project Re-ViEW: A register approach to World Englishes and compilation of resources for its study (International Corpus of English-Gibraltar).

Details are as follows:
Grant no.: FFI2017-82162-P, for the period 01/01/2018 – 31/12/2020
Funding institution: Spanish Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness
Funding received: 60.500 euros plus one four-year PhD research position

ICNICE 2018: Call for Papers open until 15th January

Click here for the CfPs and full description of the international conference ICNICE 2018: Pushing English to the limit. Innovation, creativity and communicative negotiation in native and non-native contexts, to be held at the University of Santiago de Compostela on 14-15 June 2018.

ICNICE 2018 is organised by ELC and the team SPERTUS (‘Spoken English Research Team at the University of Santiago de Compostela’), led by Professor Ignacio Palacios Martínez. The aim of this two-day conference is to delve into the nature of spoken English in such domains as teenage talk and ELF internet conversations, which are major sources of linguistic innovation destined to exert an important influence in the future of the English language.

Abstract submission is open till 15th January 2018.

Iván Tamaredo receives the Best Presentation Award AEDEAN 2017

At the 41st AEDEAN International Conference held on 8-10 November 2017 at the University of La Laguna, Iván Tamaredo, a member of the VLCG team,  received the prestigious Catalina Montes Award to the best presentation by a PhD student, in the fields of theoretical and applied linguistics. Congratulations!

María José López-Couso, Belén Méndez-Naya, Paloma Núñez-Pertejo and Ignacio Palacios receive AEDEAN’s 2017 Book Award

At the 41st AEDEAN International Conference held on 8-10 November 2017 at the University of La Laguna, María José López-Couso, Belén Méndez-Naya, Paloma Núñez-Pertejo and Ignacio Palacios received the 2017 Research Award “Leocadio Martín Mingorance” for the volume Corpus linguistics on the move: Exploring and understanding English through corpora (Language and Computers Series 79). Amsterdam: Brill/Rodopi, 2016.

Tres nuevas ayudas de investigación competitivas concedidas a la red y sus grupos

Por resolución de 16/10/2017 de las Consellerías de Cultura, Educación e Ordenación Universitaria, y Economía, Emprego e Industria de la Xunta de Galicia se han concedido tres importantes ayudas de investigación a la red ELC y a los grupos LVTC y VLCG:

  • 01/01/2017 – 30/12/2019: ED431D 2017/09: Axudas do Programa de Consolidación e Estruturación de Unidades de Investigación Competitivas – Rede de Investigación English Linguistics Circle. 120.000 euros.
  • 01/01/2017 – 30/12/2019: ED431B 2017/12: Axudas do Programa de Consolidación e Estruturación de Unidades de Investigación Competitivas – GPC. IP: Teresa Fanego (USC). 90.000 euros.
  • 01/01/2017 – 30/12/2020: ED431C 2017/50: Axudas do Programa de Consolidación e Estruturación de Unidades de Investigación Competitivas – GRC. IP: Javier Pérez Guerra (UVigo). 200.000 euros.

Yolanda Joy Calvo Benzies obtains a position as Lecturer at the UIB

Yolanda J. Calvo Benzies, a member of the SPERTUS team and of ELC, has been promoted to a position as Lecturer (‘Ayudante Doctor’) at the University of the Balearic Islands.

Congratulations to Yolanda, her PhD advisor, Ignacio Palacios Martínez, and the SPERTUS team! 

Selected Proceedings of ELC4 now published

A peer-reviewed volume stemming from the Fourth International Postgraduate Conference on Language and Cognition (ELC4), held at the University of Vigo on 4-6 February 2015, has now been published by Peter Lang.

At the 9th International Conference of AELINCO (Spanish Association for Corpus Linguistics) recently held at the Université Paris Diderot – Paris 7, María José López-Couso, Belén Méndez-Naya, Paloma Núñez-Pertejo and Ignacio Palacios received the 1st Research Award ‘Aquilino Sánchez’ (MODALIDAD A: Premio de investigación para investigadores/as experimentados/as) for the volume Corpus linguistics on the move: Exploring and understanding English through corpora (Language and Computers Series 79). Amsterdam: Brill/Rodopi, 2016.
