María José López-Couso has passed the ‘habilitation’ exam
It was recently announced that our colleague María José López-Couso, a member of the VLCG team and currently Dean of the Faculty of Philology at Santiago de Compostela, has brilliantly passed the habilitation exam (‘acreditación’) qualifying her for promotion to a chair in English Language and Linguistics. Congratulations, María José!
The VLCG team has obtained a competitive postdoctoral contract ‘Juan de la Cierva’
23 June: it was announced today that the VLCG team and the postdoctoral fellow Raquel Vea have been awarded a competitive postdoctoral two-year contract ‘Juan de la Cierva’, funded by the National Programme for Excellence in Scientific and Technical Research (Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness). Raquel was one of the 11 successful applicants (out of a total of 77 who put their names forward) in the fields of Philology and Philosophy (FFI).
Raquel Vea graduated from the University of La Rioja in 2008; she completed her DEA in 2010, an MA in Discourse Studies in 2012, and a second MA in Secondary Teacher Education at UNIR in 2014. In December 2013 she defended her PhD dissertation at La Rioja on the topic “Lexical functions in the formation of Old English nouns and adjectives”, under the supervision of Prof. Javier Martín Arista, Senior Lecturer in English Linguistics and Director of the research unit on Morphology and syntax in Functional Grammars: synchronic and diachronic applications.

Two new research projects awarded to ELC members
April 15th: it was announced that research teams led by Teresa Fanego and Elena Seoane have received funding from the National Programme for Excellence in Scientific and Technical Research (Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness), to carry out the following R&D projects involving international cooperation:
— Exploring gradience and constructionalization in linguistic variation: evidence from contemporary and historical English (grant FFI2014-52188-P; funding obtained: 93.700 €, plus one four-year PhD research position). Team members: Teresa Fanego, María José López Couso, Belén Méndez Naya, Paloma Núñez Pertejo, Fátima Faya, Carlos Prado Alonso, Paula Rodríguez Puente, Cristina Blanco García, Tamara Bouso, Tania de Dios, Beatriz Mato Míguez, Mario Serrano Losada, Graeme Trousdale (Univ. of Edinburgh), Hubert Cuyckens (KU Leuven), Hendrik De Smet (KU Leuven), Liesbet Heyvaert (KU Leuven).
— Morphosyntactic variation in World Englishes and compilation of resources for its study (the Gibraltar component of the International Corpus of English) (grant FFI2014-53930-P; funding obtained: 56.900 €, plus one four-year PhD research position). Team members: Elena Seoane (UVigo), Lucía Loureiro Porto (UIB), Cristina Suárez Gómez (UIB), Eva María Vives Centelles (UIB), Jennifer Ballantine (Garrison Library, Gibraltar), Marianne Hundt (Univ. of Zurich), Gerold Schneider (Univ. of Konstanz).
Elena Seoane has been appointed Review Editor of English Language and Linguistics (C.U.P.)
At a recent meeting, the Press Syndicate of Cambridge University Press formally confirmed the appointment of our colleague Elena Seoane as Review Editor of the journal English Language and Linguistics (ELL), for a four-year term. She succeeds Bas Aarts, Professor of English Linguistics at University College London and Review Editor of ELL for the past four years.
English Language and Linguistics, the official journal of the International Society for the Linguistics of English (ISLE), is the top journal in the field of English linguistics. It has an impact factor of 0.54 (Q1) in SCImago (SCOPUS) Journal Rank and 0.7 (Q2) in Thomson Reuters’ JCR for Linguistics.

A new postgraduate grant awarded to a junior ELC member
We are delighted to announce that Paula Márquez-Caamaño, a member of the PCC team, has been awarded a competitive three-year predoctoral grant from the Plan I2C (Directorate General for University Policy) of the Regional Government of Galicia.

The Linguistic Society of America awards a regular fellowship to Iria de Dios-Flores
We are delighted to announce that Iria de Dios-Flores, a member of the PCC team, has been awarded a fellowship by the Linguistic Society of America (LSA), to attend the 2015 Linguistic Institute at the University of Chicago.
A limited number of fellowships are available on a very competitive basis to students attending the Linguistic Institute. The fellowship award covers, inter alia, the entire cost of tuition (2,000 US dollars).

Members of the LVTC team are carrying out the compilation of the APU Writing Corpus 1979-1988
Nuria Yáñez-Bouza and Victorina González-Díaz, with four other members of the LVTC team, are currently involved in the compilation of the APU Writing Corpus 1979-1988, a diachronic corpus of schoolchildren´s writings aged 11, under funding from the Regional Government of Galicia (Directorate General for Scientific and Technological Promotion, grant no. 2014/028; 88,000 Euros). The ELC4 Conference in the press
Read about the Fourth International Postgraduate Conference on Language and Cognition (ELC4) at DUVI 04/02/2015.
The ELC4 Conference is being held at the University of Vigo (Spain). The plenary speakers are: J. Carlos Acuña-Fariña (University of Santiago de Compostela), Pedro Álvarez-Mosquera (University of Salamanca) and Marjolijn Verspoor (University of Groningen).
It is organised, jointly with ASYRAS 2015, by postgraduate students from the English Departments at the Universities of Vigo and Santiago de Compostela, together with the Department of Social and Experimental Psychology at Santiago de Compostela, and supported by the English Linguistics Circle.
PhD awarded: Paula Rodríguez-Abruñeiras
20 January 2015: Congratulations to Paula Rodríguez-Abruñeiras, who defended her PhD thesis entitled Exemplifying markers in English: Synchronic and diachronic considerations [European Doctorate]. Paula is a member of the VLCG team.

Jorge L. Bueno-Alonso receives the AEDEAN 2014 Best Translated Book Award
At the 38th International Conference of AEDEAN recently held at the University of Alcalá, Jorge Luis Bueno-Alonso received the 2014 Best Translated Book Award for his translation from Middle English into Galician of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Jorge Luis is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Vigo and a member of the LVTC team.
